Editorial Policy

This page explains how the UK Power Cut guides are written, checked and kept up to date. Guides are published under the name UKPowerCut Editorial Team.

What we publish

Practical information for people in the UK who have a power cut, expect one, or want to be prepared: safety, food, heating, vulnerable people, compensation and your rights, and how the electricity network works. We do not publish sponsored articles, and advertising never decides what we write or recommend. We do not recommend specific brands of equipment.

How guides are researched and checked

  • Facts, figures and rules come from official or primary sources: Ofgem, the electricity network operators, the Energy Networks Association, gov.uk, the NHS, the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland, Ofcom, the Health and Safety Executive, fire and rescue services, Citizens Advice and the Met Office.
  • Every guide lists its sources at the end and shows the date it was last checked.
  • We use digital tools, including AI writing assistance, to help draft and check guides. Every guide is checked against the sources it lists before it is published, and safety advice always follows the official guidance.
  • We do not give medical, legal or financial advice. Where it matters we point you to the right people: 999, NHS 111, your network operator, your insurer or Citizens Advice.

Keeping guides up to date

Compensation amounts and other rules can change, usually every April. We review the guides at least once a year and whenever an official source changes. The “last checked” date on each guide shows when it was last reviewed.

Corrections

If you spot something that is wrong or out of date, please tell us. We check every report and correct mistakes promptly.

Independence

UK Power Cut is independent. We are not a network operator or energy supplier, and we are not affiliated with Ofgem or any government body. Live power cut data comes from the network operators’ open data and is credited where it appears. Read more about us.
